Reading a quote: bid, ask and spread
Your broker always shows two prices for gold:
| Price | Who uses it | |
|---|---|---|
| Bid | 4,030.20 | You sell at the bid |
| Ask | 4,030.45 | You buy at the ask |
The ask is always a little higher than the bid. The difference is the spread, here 4,030.45 − 4,030.20 = $0.25. It is the broker's main fee.
